The Panic Button was added as an option in the Android operating system’s config.Xml file, but it is still not functional.
By default, users have to tap the button four times in quick succession, but this number can be changed by the OEM implementing the functionality. This will take you to the home screen from where you will be able to uninstall the malicious app. This way, panic button feature detects when the back button has been tapped quickly in succession, one too many times and proceeds to override the app to reboot the back action. To exit a malicious app, Android user needs to hit the ‘Back’ button four times. So, as quickly as you yell ‘Oh Shit’, you will shut down the app by using Panic Button. Google has added a “panic button” feature to Android 7.1 that would allow smartphone users to quickly exit a misbehaving app upon the realization that something is amiss. And, if the past is any indication, this is not the first time that Apps on Android Play Store have posed a risk to users’ online privacy. This feature couldn’t come soon enough, as the fear of treacherous apps is not some fantasy land threat, but a proven reality. In April 2017, a group of researchers reported that hundreds of apps in the Google Play store had a vulnerability that could leave devices open to hackers. Just last week two Android malware were reported – Cop圜at and SpyDealer. It turns out that Google might just have found the perfect solution. If there ever was a time to introduce a ‘Panic Button,’ then this is it. And the moment we realized it, we start hitting the ‘Back’ button on our Android smartphone in panic, but it keeps opening new links. How many times it happened to you that you clicked a shady link, downloaded an unverified app or submitted information on some online form and realized instantly that you had fallen victim of some form of hack.
